I'm in Wikipedia
I wanted to tinker a bit with Microsoft's new Bing so I decided to egosurf and lo-and-behold but one of the various links is a link to a Wikipedia Page (and I didn't create it even).

Cool! I've made it to Wikipedia :-)

Bigotry and Religious Fredom
Bounce from the Atheist Revolution
I am confident that some do indeed feel threatened by gay marriage (or even the existence of GLBT individuals), but I suspect that most are motivated by a fear of tolerance and what it might do to the intolerant beliefs they have embraced.

Good general article about intolerance in the fundamentalist community.
enjoy.

Niqab wearing woman denied French citizenship - Muslim member of Govt says "Good"
We need to see and hear more of these stories
A Muslim member of the French Government has attacked the head-to-toe Islamic dress as a prison, applauding a court decision to deny citizenship to a Moroccan woman who wore it.

She was denied citizenship because she "had failed to integrate".
Failed to integrate is an understatement:
She lives virtually as a recluse, disconnected from French society. She has no concept of laïcité [the principle of the secular State] nor the right to vote. She lives in total subservience to the men in her family

Good job France. If someone wants to become a citizen of a country, they should do more than just living there. Showing even a basic knowledge of the country they live in seems a good start.
Its also a good move to remind some groups (particularly whacky religious groups of any type) that they have to play well with everyone, not just their own group...

No Pork at Internation Conference Because Muslims Don't Like It...
Reminds me of the old saying: If you don't like something, don't do it...

Because some Muslims at the International Conference don't like pork, no one at the International Conference gets to eat Pork.

I really hate hearing about ignorance like this. I feel like eating a batch of bacon now.

Oh the Irony, it hurts: Pat Robertson on the inconsistencies in the Koran
Mr Pot, meet Mr Kettle

In answering a question on if Christians should read the Koran:
It won’t be wrong if somebody studies Islam, but they need guided study, because somebody needs to go along and point out the incredible inconsistencies in that book.

and this gem:
Many people who are Muslim don’t know what the Koran says. And when you begin to tell them, they say, “Well, I don’t believe that.” And you say, “Well, it’s in your sacred book. It’s supposed to be holy words.”

What the Fuck??? Hallmark sold my name to Wildmon and the AFA!
Whenever I submit my email to a website, I tend to use a unique email so if I start to get spammed from them I can block just that email and be done with it.

So anyway, about a month ago, I started getting crap from the loonies at the AFA. At first I just ignored them. I had subscribed to a Republican list during the election and I figured they sold me out to all the right-wing wackos.

But today I got a message from AFA and actually looked at it and realized that they were sending it to the address I had given Hallmark!!! What the Fuck!!!!

I knew Hallmark was not exactly progressive, but I didn't know they associated with such radical hate groups as the AFA.

Feel free to complain here.

I have recently started getting email messages from the American Family Association using the email address I gave to you.

I would never have given your company my email address if I had any idea that you would pass it along, much less if I knew you would pass it along to such reprehensible groups as the AFA. And I know it was your company that gave it to them since I used a unique email when I registered.

If this is the kind of hate group your company chooses to associate with, that is your business.

I no longer plan shop at Hallmark or hallmark.com, and I will do what I can to tell others about the groups your company associates with. I will do what I can to ensure that no one I know does business with you.

“If I didn’t take my son’s life, he would have lost his eternal salvation”
Not much I can say about this story from Virginia Beach.

Apparently this guy was a major jesus freak (his myspace status read: "Jesus Freak in the mood for ice cream" (unfortunately myspace has deleted the accounts)) and he didn't want his son to lose his salvation.

Sad when religion drives people to be crazy, but I've said before that the logical extension of "eternal happiness" and loving someone is that you would want to kill them so they could never risk damnation and eternal torture. A truly loving parent would kill their child immediately after baptism to prevent devils from tempting their child and having their child not get salvation.

This is what dogma breeds. I suspect we just don't hear about how often this really happens.

Sam Harris: "I now realize...that I knew nothing of the pain that a pious Muslim man might feel at the sight of young women learning to read."
A reply to Jerry Coyne's 'Seeing is Believing' (a generic theist rant) by several prominent atheists. Its long, but generally interesting, but my favorite take-away quote from the whole thing has to be by Sam Harris:
I now realize -- belatedly and to my great chagrin -- that I knew nothing of the pain that a pious Muslim man might feel at the sight of young women learning to read.

What Century are we in??? School in Oklahoma Accuses Girl of "Witchcraft"
I mean, really... WTF???

Grabbed this one off Pharyngula: Oklahoma school administrators accuse a student of witchcraft. (the ACLU is involved too)

Just the thought that anyone in 21st century America would even think witchcraft is real is scary. But its one thing to think your bible tells you to fear witches, and entirely another to violate a teenager's rights because you think she is casting hexes.

And make no mistake about it, this trouble is being brewed up because hysterical theists. They already believe in unprovable invisible things, so its easy for them to just add a few more ridiculous claims tot he mix.

"It's hard for me to believe that in the year 2000 I am walking into court to defend my daughter against charges of witchcraft brought by her own school," said Timothy Blackbear. "But if that's what it takes to clear her record and get her life back to normal, that's what we'll do."

A Christian Defends the Atheist Bus Ads
God's Big Enough to Take It

We Christians have been plastering verses from the Bible over public spaces for years. Let the atheists have their ads

From some of the recent overreactions you'd think that Christians can't handle anyone who dare's to challenge the "status quo".

Luckily, it seems that at least one guy gets it. If your god exists, I doubt seriously he is terribly hurt by a public ad or two. And just maybe you need to think about your faith a bit and just why you believe what you do.

"Hokey Pokey" a Religious Hate Song
Here's a curious item I picked up from the fine folks at the Dogma Free America Podcast; seems some Catholics in Scotland think singing the Hokey Pokey may constitute an act of religious hatred.
A spokesman for the leader of the church in Scotland said the song had disturbing origins.

Critics claim that Puritans composed the song in the 18th century in an attempt to mock the actions and language of priests leading the Latin mass.

I searched around and found a wikipedia article and a second reference, but it seems this interpretation of the history of the song is in dispute.

I think the idea that the Hokey Pokey originated as a mockery of the Catholic Church is a fascinating and funny idea. I enjoy mocking religion, and the thought that some groups hundreds of years ago were mocking each others rituals is just funnee.

Regardless of the origins of the song, clearly the modern singing of the song has nothing to do with what some 18th century shaker thought about the church.

This sounds like another case of the Streisand Effect. Now that they've brought up the idea that it pisses off Catholics then sure people will start to do it to piss off the Catholics whereas before it was just a silly song to sing to your football rivals.

Special Idiot Muslim Comments Double Issue!
A good man can do good things without religion. And a bad man can do bad things with religion. But to be really stoopid it takes religion.

Saudi Cleric Calls for 'One-Eyed' Niqabs

An older story (from Oct 3), but still hilariously stoopid.
Sheikh Muhammad al-Habadan said showing both eyes encouraged women to use eye make-up to look seductive.

But even better!

'Scientific' Proof that Women Cannot Talk and Remember Simultaneously

"Two areas in a woman's brain are activated when she talks. As we can see, there are many centers of speech in a woman's brain. There is a center in each lobe, while in the case of a man, there is only one center, here. The opposite center does not operate during speech, because it is busy remembering."

"When a Woman Talks, She Might Use the Part of the Brain Containing the Memory for Talking – And That's It, The Data is Lost"

Be careful reading these stories, the stoopid, it hurts...

Victory for the good guys
South Carolina Residents Will Have To Settle For Bumper Stickers

I can't find the earlier link, but I've commented before on the utterly ridiculous "I Believe" license plates that were enacted in South Carolina. Well, luckily someone actually noticed that the plates were blatantly Christian and were patently unconstitutional.

What really makes the whole thing sick is that the idiots who proposed the law are openly and unabashedly admitting that they don't care that the law was unconstitutional

Asked by a reporter if he would support a license plate for Islam, Rep. Bill Sandifer replied, “Absolutely and positively no…. I would not because of my personal belief, and because I believe that wouldn’t be the wish of the majority of the constituency in this house district.”

Quick Note: ACLU is not anti-Christian
(tho most of my blog entries are quick notes anyway :-)

Ran across this post on the ACLU blog: Just for Jesus.

This information needs to spread to help arm people to counter the common claim that the ACLU is anti-religious/anti-Christian when really nothing could be further from the truth.

"Religion of Peace" = Pure Barbarism
In this clip from a popular Saudi talk show, the host and guests calmly discuss the proper way to beat your wife according to Allah's will. They even compare how to treat your wife with how one might treat your donkey or other animals.

It's just sad and sick.

A batch of atheism links
I've collected a batch of atheism themed links to entertain:

Leading off is a great retort for the "Atheists are Arrogant" Argument. I've heard the basic idea before, but its still a good one.
Check it out below the fold )

Then we have "A Right-Winger's Guide to Life's Value".
Amazing how little value they place on so many living things while holding sacrosanct a single fertilized egg.
Check it out below the fold )

In the same vein, we have a Florida woman who feels she needs to police the public library and has stolen a sex-ed book "to protect the children". Despite a court order, she says she'd rather go to jail than return the book.
She's taken it upon herself to keep parents from using the book as an educational guide to their curious children. Thanks, but I think I can parent without this old lady's help.

To lighten things up a bit is a nice entry "Godless Science vs Religion: Why and How Godless Science is Superior to Religion".
Block after block of ways science has made life better and the corresponding reasons religion held us back. Good to know and good ammo.

Finally, there's a new YouTube entry from Edward Current titled "God Only SEEMS Nonexistent".
He's building a great collection of damning-with-slight-praise videos and this one keeps up his high standards.
Check it out below the fold )

Score one for Edumication
Judge says the University of California can deny course credit to high school science courses that don't teach science.

It seems pretty obvious that if a HS science course doesn't actually teach science, then it shouldn't be used to score college prep credits for science, but as usual, some people don't understand that point and sued.

How can a HS science course not actually teach science? Well, when the science course in question insist that the Bible is infallible and use that as a basis to reject common science frameworks like evolution.

UC is not claiming that all Biblically based frameworks are not allowed.
[T]he university has approved many courses containing religious material and viewpoints, including some that use such texts as "Chemistry for Christian Schools" and "Biology: God's Living Creation," or that include scientific discussions of creationism as well as evolution.

UC drew the line at a text from Bob Jones University "Biology for Christian Schools," declares on the first page that "if (scientific) conclusions contradict the Word of God, the conclusions are wrong."

Some more information on the ruling can be found at Panda's Thumb.
